“The First Time”
I saw her standing in a crowd speaking,
and that she did with confidence and eloquence.
Everyone within earshot listened attentively
as if the queen had graced them with her presence.
Her physical stature was not too great
yet she commanded attention and respect.
Each word spoken was precise and poignant
she possessed a quick wit and superior intellect.
They encircled her all around
as she spoke words that motivated and inspired.
Her new acquaintances formed a virtual shield
for this precious treasure they had recently acquired.
I stood amongst some colleagues who talked
of politics and relations both foreign and familiar.
As I turned, our eyes briefly met,
and for a moment, it all seemed quite peculiar.
Walking confidently across the floor,
the crowd parted as I came your way.
Though I had planned to spend the night at home
I was now thrilled to have attended this soiree.
“May I have this dance?” I asked.
Unknowingly, I was extending my hand into a fire.
“ Why, of course.” She responded.
Around her neck she wore beautiful sapphire.
The evening seemed to pass quickly,
as we talked and danced into the early morn.
Knowing the soiree was nearing its end,
with deep chagrin, I welcomed the coming dawn.
“A pleasure meeting you”
was all she chose to say.
I took her hand in mine and simply replied,
“Enchanté.” Then we parted. Much to my dismay.
On the long drive home,
I replayed the events of evening ceaselessly.
From the scent of her soft, supple skin
to how we talked and danced tirelessly.
I could not help but wonder,
if and when I will I see her again.
Hoping this was more than a flight of fancy;
More than just an ephemeral yen.
